"Miss...Powerless" Blog post #3 Joe Rota

Throughout the documentary of Miss Representation there were lots of statistics and information that caught my attention, and at a few points caught my emotion. I started to gain this sense of anger I guess, at how pathetic and dehumanizing our media is toward women. As Jim Steyer said " The media is delivering content that is shaping our society's, politics, national discourse, and our children's minds". Being exposed to at least 10 hours of media content a day there is no escape in a midern society. It Starts out at a young age as girls become aware of thier bodies and with the help of the media through reality television shows and magazines thier interpretation of beauty is currupted. In most ads a womens body is skewed and digitaly altered to which the media deems the perfect body. This becomes an unrealistic goal to women and a standard for men. young teenage girls and women a like strive toward that "perfection" as they are exposed to defferent media. Thus causing eating disorders, Cosmetic demands and deminishing their inner security and integrity for who they are. As quoted by Alice walker" The most common way people give up power is by thinking they dont have any" and with women making up 51% of the US population there should be no reason why women only make up 3% of clout positions in telecummincations, entertainment, publishingand advertising. Imagine that, If the majority of positions were of women in the advertising industry what would that look like? Seeing that the majority of Backlash comes from male politicians, talk show host, and etc. when a women is succeful or doesn't portay themselves as the media does, Its shocking. I dont think they would criticise their mother like that. Most media as in advertisments and music sexually objectifies women. Seeing this on bilboards, in magaizes, or in lyrics. Music is one part of the intertainment industry, but nonetheless, I believe has tremedous roll in the shaping of out youth today. In main stream music and radio you see music videos where a male rapper or female singer is surrounded by the opposite sex in lascivious ways. Even in live performances taking this years past superbowl half time show for example. You have Beyonce who is a very talented singer and performer and more of a classy lady and her back up dancers all "in these skimpy outfits dry humping the stage". I'm quoting this from one of my Professor's rants. Still holds true becuase thats what society expects now. If we had the Prague Philiharmonic Orchestral play at the superbowl which would be an incredible performance the majority of people at the superbowl and the rest of the world watching it would probably much rather see a wet t-shirt contest or mud fight. One of my favorite quotes from Miss Repsentation was "You can't be what you can't see" by Marie Willson. If all we are seeing is male supuriority in Politics and in Corportate jobs and Women being sexual objects in cologne Ads (which we are) we as a society in whole need to implement a more positive ideal of womens rolls into our youth as they begin to mature and by doing so hopefully close the parity and equality gap that lies between male and female postions on any level.

  1. I liked how you brought up the point about the superbowl. I think its very sad that society has caved so much that we rather watch boarder line porn then appreciate the arts

  2. "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any." What a great quote. This document was great because it opened up our eyes to see how influential and affective our media is on women, but what this document doesn't express enough is that it is almost discriminating men as much as women. Not only are women perceived to look skinny and sexy as core values, but men are to be perceived as fit and powerful. I believe men are affected just as much as women being discriminated and influenced just as much. Women also see "how a man should be" and create standards, just as men for women. Its nature in the battle of the sexes. All in all, I do have sympathy towards women and their current struggles with discrimination but i think most of it all is from self doing.
