Abbey Vivas Blog 3: Miss Representation

Miss Representation a documentary states how media denigration of women leads directly to the under-representation socially, academically, particularly, or politically. This as been an issue that many of us don not pay attention because we see it as being normal, at least I know I did. After watching this documentary, it opened my eyes to see at things that I did not notice before.
The statistic that stood-out the most was, “68% of the females have eating disorders” this was shocking because this means that more than half of the women in the world seek to have that model figure body, which we all know its hardly impossible, due to the technology that molds the woman's body to the perfection. If we take a look around us especially in media, we can see how the majority of young women they are skinny because if they aren't they are not “good enough.” It is scary to know that teenagers are much more worry on how they look instead of how well they should do in school. It is the pressure that teenagers are put upon to have that gorgeous body that seems to attract men.

My sister just turned 13 and I can already see how she looks at the mirror every morning and while she is changing, she automatically asks me if this shirt makes her look fat? This frightens me, this is the age that most young girls start to think about their weight and start to lack within their nutrients that are needed daily. Last week, while I was babysitting, I watched Disney Channel and to my surprise that show also exposes how young girls must have a talent to be popular either by being a dancer, singer, an athlete, and so on. Most of the girls are pretty and skinny, oh, and have a great sense of fashion. This is why many girls start to look at themselves differently and look at their imperfections and lose weight, put on make-up, and dress not according to their age.
I agree that women should not let anyone or anything take control of their power. Especially, now that children are expose to sexual, violence, and drug contexts. All females should challenge the media and be so good that no one cannot ignore them. Always having in mind that what truly matters is that only you have the power to control your life.

  1. I agree when you say that woman should challenge the media. Woman do have control over their lives and should take it. Woman in ads are not naturally like that and are airbrushed to look 'perfect.' I remember in high school when some girls would go to the bathroom just to put on more make up and make sure that their hair was still good. Mostly all those girls were doing bad in school because they were more focused on their looks then homework. They also spent more time getting guys. It's sad that so many woman have an eating disorder just to have the perfect body that doesn't exist. I wish woman would accept their body and love it because everyone woman is beautiful no matter how they look.

  2. Yeah that's right i also remember that too, but actually i saw it within my friends in middle school! Totally, to make a change we (females) should focus more on our education than our looks.
