Allie Wagner blog 3

After watching the documentary Miss Representation, I started to think about whether or not I thought that women are portrayed provocatively to young girls and sending the wrong message to young children. I also thought about whether or not I found women to still treated as unequal amongst men. I think that both starts are true. In my opinion, women are shown with a lot of cleavage in many media messages, throwing themselves at man as if they have no morality, and allowing men to show them disrespect in medi communication. Jennifer Newson stated in the film, "the media sends the message their value lies in their bodies." Media disempowers women and showing the wrong message to boys allowing them to think that girls are supposed to be disempowered and supposed to look like they do on tv. I also think that men and women are to Thursday treated as if unequal. Men are still in higher power than women in politics, corporations, and in te workspace in general. However, I do not think this is because men in general think that women are incapable of doing the job, I think this is because te generations that are still in higher positions as a profession are from the generation where women were going to work more was still new. Katie Couric stated in the film, "media can be an instrument of change." I think that if media were to use their power of influence of people to present an equal message of men to women, then there would be a widerspread of women in power. I think more people of older generations would want to see more women in power.

YouTube is a big media communication medium. There are many music videos shown and in many of them women are wearing provocative clothing and are doing sexual things. They also usually show men who are in power and looking as if they are supposed to be cool. These videos send the wrong message to young girls and boys. Girls think that this is how they are supposed to act in order for boys to like them and boys think that girls needs to dress and act this way in order to be hot. Katie Couric stating, "media can be an instrument of change." If media were an instrument of change then they could be sending the message to children that shows how girls should be and boys should see girls. They should show girls not by how they look but by the person they are. Also, Jennifer Newson says, "the media sends the message their value lies in their bodies." When women are shown to be disempowered in videos on YouTube, boys and girls think that girls aren't supposed to be in power. Boys are sent the message they need to be more powerful than women.

Rihanna is a faux pas. I think Rihanna is a influential women pop singer. She is a role model for many young girls and she has gotten back together with her boyfriend Chris Brown. Chris Brown had previously beaten her up. Her going back to him sends the message to girls that it is ok for women to be treated this way by men. She is telling young boys that it is ok for them to treat girls disrespectfully.
