The documentary Miss Representation stated a lot of facts about how females are not getting a lot of attention this society when it comes to moves or TV shows, or how TV is changing the views of children and how they should look in our society.
One person in the movie Miss Representation stated that, you need to have women be successful so that other women can dream of doing the same. I agree and disagree with this statement, I agree with this statement because having a good role model/idle is good for some people, because some people need a role model to become successful. They use their role model as a goal to reach for. I disagree with this statement because some people don’t need a role model/ idle to become successful in this society, they set their own goals and shoot for them.
One statistic that was presented in the documentary was that 16% of females are protagonists in movies. This is because the directors and the fund providers for the movies think that a female protagonist won’t bring in a lot of money in the box offices. But this is false; a couple of examples of successful movies are Twilight and Sex and the City. Twilight brought in over 300,000,000, and Sex and the City brought in over 400,000,000. This is proof that having female protagonists will bring in money, and that people do want to see female protagonists in films.
A real situation of a movie shows only 16% of females in films are protagonists is the movie called My Super Ex-Girlfriend. It’s about a girl that has super hero like powers named Jenny and a her boyfriend named Matt, but matt ends up dumping her, and Jenny uses her super powers and makes Matt’s life a living hell. This movie Grossed in over 8 million just in the US on the opening weekend. This shows by having a female protagonist in a movie does sell at the box office. Movies like this should show the producers that having a female protagonist will make money and will also broaden the range in the types of movies that could be made, and not have only one genre to shoot for.
I would definitely agree with your statement that some women do not necessarily have to have role models in order to achieve their goals in life. What about the women who are being established as role models now, did they have role models themselves or did they simply set their own goals and follow them? I believe this is something women need to think about if they hope to achieve equality sooner
