miss representation blog CHRISTIAN FRY

Through looking up some statistics from the movie Miss representation, I found some interesting facts. These facts shocked me in a way because I had assumed some things that these statistics are now telling me I was wrong to assume. The first being a statistic I looked up on the film’s website. “51.4 percent of managers in the United States are women.” I can’t necessarily agree or disagree with this statement because I have no qualifications on the matter to do so. I can however say that I found this fact very interesting. Most people would assume the manager in a friend’s story about work was a man when the manager’s sex was not discussed originally. I have assumed the same thing many times. This fact proves that assumption is wrong. Society and the media are the originators of this wrongful assumption. In movies and television shows the managers or bosses of establishments are generally male. Society tells us that the men are supposed to be in charge and therefore a woman in charge of an establishment seems ridiculous.
The second fact or statement that the movie brought up, that I also thought was very interesting was the idea that the men have equal amounts societal pressure on their shoulders as the women. Often times it’s seen that the women of our society have it bad. They are expected to conform to many different expectations often unfairly so. The movie brought up the counter point that yes, the girls are under immense pressure but the boys are too, and sometimes it’s worse. Specifically speaking one man mentioned the fact that society tells boys that they need to make more money than girls and if they don’t, how could they be a man? This way of thinking is outrageous but so many believe and prescribe to it. We can see the media also playing a part in this in rap videos. Of course there are many other examples but the rappers in these videos are almost always showing off their wealth and often flashing cash at the camera. Then, all the women in the videos are all over these rappers because, it seems, of their money and power and status. This sends the wrong message to kids, and adults. Men shouldn’t feel like less of a man because there is a woman in a position of power over him.

  1. i agree with you that boys have a lot of pressure when growing up. they are tought not to cry and always be better then girls at everything. i noticed that in my culture when men cheet its ok because they are men, they can be forgiven, but if women cheat they are unforgiven.
