Blogg # 2 “where are you going, where have you been,” (A.P.G)

The story, “where are you going, where have you been,” written by Joyce carol oates was inspired by an article that was about Charles Schmid; He would take young girls and sexually abuse them but also ending their life. His characteristic was much similar to Arnold friend because he was short and stuffed his boots to make himself taller, with dyed black hair, makeup to make him seem younger.

In the story the main character is Connie a fifteen year old girl who has not defined her personality yet. Through the beginning of the story Connie has a double personality because at home she’s someone else while out with her friends she has this older way of acting and dresses more sexually yet has no experience dealing with guys. Overall Connie has issues with her personality but at the end of the story she realizes that she has no experience of real life because once she got the attention of a older guy, Arnold Friend, she was scared and did not know how what to do with the situation but finally decided that she did not want her family involved Also by interacting with Arnold her view of the world changes, “so much land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to know that she was going to it.”  It shows that she was unprepared for reality and that she proved to be more innocent.

When I read this story I liked the way the author made her story real but have some imaginary situations. The story explains a situation that can and has happened yet the character seem to have some fantasy to them especially Arnold. at the end we do not know what really happens to Connie but the author left it to the reader to make their own ending yet knowing that Arnold did  harm her because Connie seemed scared to the choice she has made, so unsure of herself, her personality still not defined.

(hope its not the same as class discussion)
